Secured by Design is a police initiative aimed at encouraging design that reduces crime. It recognises that the physical features of public spaces directly impact the opportunities for crime; in the case of lighting design, this can include dark corners, unevenly lit pedestrian routes, or badly positioned security lighting.
Lighting Against Crime is written in conjunction with the Institute of Lighting Professionals (ILP). It challenges the assumption that more light automatically results in greater security. Instead it questions what makes people feel safe.
For architects, planners and developers, this document provides a balanced approach that seeks to improve safety and security while still protecting residential amenity.
